Here are some tips to make the best of your session!

How to Prepare Your Children for a Mini Session with Live Animals

Mini sessions with live animals—like fluffy baby chicks—create adorable and timeless memories. However, for young children, the experience can be both exciting and overwhelming. A little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a fun, smooth, and stress-free session. Here’s what you need to know before the big day!

1. Talk About the Experience in Advance

Children are naturally curious, but they might also feel unsure around small animals. A few days before your session, explain what will happen:
✔️ They’ll meet tiny, gentle baby chicks
✔️ They need to be calm and gentle with the animals
✔️ I will guide them and take beautiful photos

Showing them pictures of baby chicks or videos of other kids interacting with small animals can help them feel excited and comfortable.

2. Choose the Right Outfit

The right outfit helps set the tone for gorgeous springtime photos. Here are a few tips:
👗 Soft, pastel colours or neutral tones work best (think light blues, pinks, creams, or greens)
🎩 Avoid busy patterns or large logos—simple is better!
👟 Comfortable shoes for little ones who may need a break between shots
🎀 Accessories like suspenders, bows, or floral crowns add a cute touch

Make sure outfits allow easy movement, so kids can interact with the animals comfortably.

3. Practice Gentle Touch & Patience

If your child hasn’t been around small animals before, practice with stuffed animals at home. Show them how to:
🖐 Use gentle hands—no grabbing or squeezing, keeping hands open and lightly cupped
🐥 Let the chicks move naturally instead of chasing them
👂 Listen to the my directions and the photographer’s helper. Most likely will be Carrie, my daughter

Let them know that the animals may wiggle, chirp, or move around, and that’s okay!

4. Keep Expectations Realistic & Stay Relaxed

Not every child will sit perfectly still or follow directions on the first try—and that’s okay!
✔️ Go with the flow—let them explore and interact naturally
✔️ Encourage smiles with songs, silly faces, or their favourite words
✔️ Trust your photographer to capture beautiful moments, even if they seem unplanned!

5. Have Fun & Enjoy the Moment!

Mini sessions with live animals are meant to be a fun and magical experience! Whether your little one is shy or full of energy, these photos will capture their unique personality and sweet interactions with the animals.
