Why Family Photo Sessions Matter (and How Often You Should Plan Them)

As a photographer and a parent, I know how quickly time seems to fly. One minute you’re rocking a newborn to sleep, and the next they’re running through the yard with scraped knees and wild giggles. Family life moves fast and it rarely pauses long enough to be perfectly captured. That’s where family photo sessions come in.

Why Family Photos Are So Important

Photos do more than just decorate our walls or fill our albums. They tell our stories, messy, beautiful, perfectly imperfect moments frozen in time. Here’s why booking regular family sessions matters:

📸 They capture growth: Kids change so much from year to year. Those baby curls, gap-toothed smiles, or teenage grins deserve to be remembered. I welcome all ages, get photos with those grown children too!

So, How Often Should You Book a Family Session?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some simple guidelines:

🔹 Once a year – This is ideal for most families. You’ll capture meaningful growth and changes over time without it feeling overwhelming.

🔹 Twice a year – Great if you have little ones who change quickly or want a mix of outdoor summer photos and cozy fall or holiday portraits.

🔹 Milestones & major life changes – New baby? Moving to a new home with a beautiful yard? Big birthday coming up and want some studio fun photos? These are all beautiful reasons to schedule a session.

The key is consistency — making family photos a tradition, just like holiday dinners or first-day-of-school pictures.
