Did I Miss The 14 day Window for Newborn Photos?

Is It Too Late to Book Newborn Photos? If you’ve just had a baby and you’re wondering whether you’ve missed the window for newborn photos, let me start with this:

Better late then never.

As a newborn photographer serving Kawartha Lakes and surrounding communities now for ten years, I aim to photograph babies within the first 14 days of life. That timeframe is ideal but real life doesn’t always follow ideal timelines. Babies arrive early, late, unexpectedly, or with complications. Moms need time to heal. Some families simply didn’t realize how early newborn sessions take place.

If you’re reading this with a newborn in your arms and thinking, “I wish I had known sooner,” this blog is for you.

Why Newborn Photos Are Typically Done in the First 14 Days

The first two weeks of life are often recommended for newborn photography because:

  • Babies are sleepier and easier to gently pose
  • They naturally curl into womb-like positions
  • Startle reflexes are minimal
  • Skin is usually smoother with less baby ance and cradle cap.

This allows for those classic, softly posed newborn images many parents love.

That said, beautiful newborn photos are absolutely possible beyond this window. It just might look different then you’d expect.

Real Reasons Parents Miss the “Ideal” Newborn Window

Over the last 10 years behind the camera, I’ve worked with many families who didn’t book early, often for very real and valid reasons:

  • Baby spent time in the NICU or hospital
  • Mom needed extra time to recover
  • A complicated birth or C-section
  • Feeding challenges or postpartum exhaustion
  • Parents didn’t initially plan to do newborn photos
  • Families didn’t realize newborn sessions happen so early

If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

So… Is It Too Late to Book Newborn Photos?

Short answer: Please ask.

While my schedule is limited, I always encourage parents to reach out and inquire, even if their baby is older than 14 days. What Newborn Sessions Look Like for Older Babies

If your baby is past the typical newborn stage, sessions may look a little different—but no less meaningful. Many parents later tell me they’re grateful for images that reflect who their baby truly was in those early weeks.

Depending on availability and baby’s age and size, I may still be able to offer:

  • A modified newborn session
  • Wrapped and relaxed posing
  • Parent-and-baby focused images
  • More awake or alert expressions
  • Natural stretches and movements
  • Parent snuggles and connection
  • Simple, timeless setups

Every baby and situation is different, and I do my best to accommodate when possible. If your baby is past the typical newborn stage, sessions may look a little different but no less meaningful.

Why You Should Still Reach Out (Even If You’re Unsure)

One of the most common messages I receive is:

“I didn’t think you’d still have room, but I thought I’d ask.”

And I’m always glad they did.

Availability changes, and sometimes I’m able to fit in late inquiries, especially for local families in Kawartha Lakes, Lindsay, Peterborough, and surrounding areas. The only way to know is to reach out and ask.

A Note for New Parents Reading This

The early days with a newborn can feel overwhelming. If photography wasn’t at the top of your list, that’s okay. But if you’re feeling that little tug, wondering if you’ll regret not having photos from this season, trust that feeling.

Even simple, natural images can become some of your most cherished memories.

Looking to Book a Newborn Session in Kawartha Lakes?

If your baby has already arrived and you’re unsure whether it’s too late, I encourage you to send an inquiry.

I photograph newborns in a calm, cozy studio setting and serve families throughout Kawartha Lakes and surrounding communities.

You’re never bothering me by asking. I’d much rather you reach out than miss the opportunity entirely.

Because it’s only too late if you don’t ask.

If you’re expecting, I recommend booking your newborn session during your second or early third trimester to ensure availability. However, last-minute and post-birth inquiries are always welcome.
