What is Popular to Wear for Family Photos in 2026?
One of the most common questions I receive before a session is:
“What should we wear?”
The good news is that you don’t need perfectly matching outfits or expensive designer clothing to create beautiful, timeless images. In fact, some of the most stunning sessions happen when families focus on a few simple styling principles. Also plan ahead, try things on, make sure everyone is comfortable and nothing is too big or too small. If you are ordering online, take that extra time for exchanges if needed.
Let’s make this the best year and keep those family portraits looking classic on your walls for years to come.

Choose Soft, Neutral Colours
Neutral colours photograph beautifully because they keep the focus on your family rather than your clothing.
Some of my favourite colours include:
- Cream
- Beige
- Taupe
- Soft brown
- Sage green
- Dusty blue
- Warm grey
- Ivory
- Soft blush
Rather than having everyone wear the exact same colour, try mixing complementary neutrals together. This creates depth and interest while keeping the overall look cohesive.
Add One Accent Colour
A great way to elevate your outfits is to choose one feature colour and pair it with neutrals.
Some beautiful combinations include:
- Cream + Sage Green
- Beige + Dusty Blue
- Ivory + Rust
- Taupe + Soft Mauve
- Cream + Mustard
The result feels coordinated without looking overly matched.
Layers Add Dimension and Don’t Forget Texture
Layers are one of the easiest ways to make photos look polished and intentional. I know this is harder to do in the warm weather but we can think about it, and because my sessions are usually in the evenings it helps not being in that direct sunlight. Texture often makes a bigger difference than colour so think about those fabrics as well.
Consider adding:
- Knit cardigans
- Chunky sweaters
- Denim jackets
- Lightweight shackets
- Linen button-down shirts
- Textured vests
- Ribbed fabrics
- Lace details
- Muslin
- Cotton gauze
Layers create visual interest and help photographs feel warm and inviting. These materials add depth and softness that photographs beautifully in both studio and outdoor sessions.
What Should Kids Wear?
Children photograph best in comfortable clothing that allows them to move and play. Avoid clothing with large logos, bright neon colours, or busy character graphics whenever possible.
Some favourites include:
- Knit rompers
- Linen dresses
- Suspender shorts
- Neutral sweaters
- Soft cotton dresses
- Simple overalls
Where Can You Shop?
You don’t need to spend a fortune to find beautiful clothing for your session. Old Navy frequently carries linen pieces, knit cardigans, textured sweaters, and neutral dresses that photograph beautifully. Their linen collections and knitwear are especially great for family sessions. For local families, don’t forget to check small boutiques and children’s clothing stores in your community. You can often find unique pieces that help your family stand out while maintaining a timeless look.

My Biggest Tip
When planning outfits, start with Mom’s outfit first. I have always said this and think it is important because it is often the hardest outfit to find to make sure mom loves it. Once you find a dress or outfit that makes you feel amazing, it becomes much easier to coordinate everyone else around it.
Remember, the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is creating images that feel like your family and will still look beautiful hanging on your wall years from now. If you’re booked with me and need help choosing outfits, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to help coordinate colours, fabrics, and styles before your session.
Don’t forget to plan those shoes and footwear for the whole family! Coordinating shoes is an easy way to tie everyone’s outfits together without feeling too matchy-matchy. Think along the lines of neutral boots for fall, sneakers for more casual vibes, or cute alpargatas for an outdoor shoot or even neutral sandals in the warming months.
